Frequently Asked Questions (or Not So FAQ)

  1. Technical Upgrades: Given that you’re building a new mobile recording kit, what specific technical upgrades or improvements are you aiming for compared to your previous setups?

Answer: There are several different kinds of recordings we’ll be doing: a) One or two voices at a time. Whether it be narrative tracking or having two actors playing off each other we’ll be using a pair of 1176 style compressors to help capture the spontaneous moment. b) Also there will be some podcast style recordings using a pair of Shure SM7b mics and two DBX 286s channel strips. In this instance the idea is to get a quick & dirty recording, good for fast publishing. c) Musical session recording requires a large kit. I favor a live ensemble recording when I can get it. A decent recording console is needed here and a healthy selection of microphones. Finally, when it comes to mixdown we’ll be using Linux (Debian) boxes running Harrison Consoles Mixbus 32c.

I am building each kit to be mobile. We’ll be able to handle one or two voice actors or musicians laying down tracks in-house. But for larger sessions we’ll rent space.

  1. Target Audience: Do you have a specific audience or genre in mind for your upcoming projects? How will this influence the way you choose voice talent and material?

Answer: Great question. Audiomyth is a production house. That means we’ll have the flexibility to not only publish original works in our own style but also we will be contracting out to other publishing houses. So the target audience will depend on the given project. But I can say the Audiomyth style will be a mix of genres as we try to stretch the current idea of audiobooks and music. What comes to mind as a pleasant sounding comparison would be something like Pink Floyd, if Pink Floyd made audiobooks.

And how this affects the choosing of voice talent is hard to nail down. Versatility behind the microphone is a nice ability. But, a self confident voice actor might mean doing only one thing well. There will be times when we need someone who can sound like a panther reciting Keats. Let’s stay open on this.

  1. Voice Talent: Where are you planning to work with the voice actors? What qualities or skills are you seeking in new talent?

Answer: Most of our recording will happen within the Albuquerque area. Depending on the nature of the session (ie. voice actors vs musicians) we will travel to meet the talent.

  1. Distribution and Marketing: How do you plan to distribute and market your product?

Answer: We plan on turning out simple volunteer supported recordings initially. These will be released free online. This will get us introduced locally as well as put some representative demos online. When things get ironed out technically and we have a stable of ready talent we’ll move into phase II.

Phase II is picking the material to match the talent we have available. Based on the estimated project size and depth of production we will work on an agreement as to the best avenue to release the product.

In short it depends upon the scale and appeal of each individual project.
